BIOGRAPHY |
| Rarely is an artist capable of
touching the hearts and souls of people of all ages,
cultures, and diverse musical backgrounds as RONI
BENISE. Armed with his Spanish guitar, an amazing
world class band of musicians, and elaborately choreographed
dancers, NIGHTS OF FIRE! captures world music at its
best, with a show that appeals to the hearts and souls
of people of all ages, cultures and musical backgrounds.
Audiences thrill to his unforgettable concerts that
unite his passionate music with elaborately choreographed
stage shows. With his “NIGHTS OF FIRE”
special airing nationwide on PBS and a U.S. tour launching
in April, 2006 marks the year he unveils his electrifying
show to the country.
Just as his fiery melodies and high-energy rhythms
weave a stunning tapestry of emotions, RONI has always
charted his own distinctive path. Since the age of
eleven (when he received his first guitar) he practiced
relentlessly, completely self-taught, mastering a
variety of different styles that were eventually to
become his own unique sound. Though unable to read
a single note, he began composing original works with
powerfully emotional arrangements that are both wild
and refined, producing a sound that is as edgy and
exotic as it is romantic and sensual. “I’m
always inspired by places I’ve traveled,”
says BENISE, “so I’ll try to capture the
essence and beauty of the different places in my melodies.
It’s truly like painting on air--creating colors
and lush soundscapes that take people (and me) away
to a safe place with no prejudice and no boundaries.”
And so began his American success story.
Leaving his family and friends to move 1500 hundred
miles away from home to Los Angeles with nothing more
than his guitar, he held in his heart the encouragement
from his parents to “work hard and have Faith!”
After being turned down by almost every club in Los
Angeles, BENISE started performing on the streets.
It was not uncommon for BENISE to put on over 200
shows a year, sometimes playing 2-3 events in a single
day. Tourists from around the world and native Angelinos
alike took to RONI like the “Pied Piper”
of Spanish guitar. From there, the path of his music
took on a life of its own, effortlessly opening doors
along the way to attract musicians, dancers and cirque
performers, eventually creating the extended family
that is now known simply as his namesake, “BENISE.”
BENISE redefined the ordinary and started to promote
his own concerts, selling out 2,000-seat theaters
throughout Southern California. Exceeding expectations,
the BENISE shows became inspiring experiences that
celebrate “Love, Music, and Life!” A natural
performer, BENISE holds his audiences captive as exotic
drums, Gypsy violin, Flamenco dancers, Cirque performers,
Brazilian Samba dancers, Brazilian Samba percussionists,
African tribal drummers, Havana horns, and brilliant
theatrical lighting work together to create an unforgettable
experience.
In addition to organizing stunning live shows, BENISE
took his career by the reins by producing, arranging
and releasing six albums--plus one live DVD--on his
own independent record label, Rosanegra Music. The
recordings capture the expressive Spanish guitar arrangements
that stem from influences around the world, carrying
listeners to such culturally rich destinations as
Spain, Africa, Brazil, the Mediterranean, Cuba, France
and Egypt. “It’s almost like writing a
soundtrack to a movie,” notes BENISE, “but
a lot of my songs tell a story so they’re perfect
for the stage.”
Marking BENISE’s most ambitious endeavor, the
NIGHTS OF FIRE! DVD and CD present an unprecedented
and spectacular journey of Spanish music and dance
that raises the standards of live performance to a
fresh new level of originality, cultural fusion and
passion. BENISE says the show’s ambition is
“to take people on a musical journey. I wanted
to push the boundaries of traditional Flamenco/Spanish
guitar while combining the elements of dance and theater.
This show is a celebration of culture; the culmination
of all the shows we’ve done over the last five
years.”
As master of ceremonies, RONI takes his mesmerized
audience on a romantic and exotic voyage through unbridled
choreography and sounds that embrace all of the artist’s
inspirations.
Launching nationally on PBS, NIGHTS OF FIRE! blends
RONI’s innovative vision with the creative minds
of director Amy Tinkham (Paul McCartney, Dixie Chicks,
Madonna, Britney Spears) and Brazilian born choreographer
Alex Magno (Madonna, Ballet Hispanico, Academy Awards).
Inspired by early reaction, BENISE reports that “the
response from people all over the country (and world)
has been overwhelming.”
Throughout NIGHTS OF FIRE!, the traditions of music
and dance are reinvented by 50 performers on a lavishly
decorated stage. Backing BENISE as he visits Spanish
Flamenco, Cuban Salsa and Brazilian Samba are such
world-class musicians as violinists Karren Briggs
(Yanni) and Jim Sitterly (John Tesh), percussionists
Munyungo (Miles Davis, Sting, Stevie Wonder), Luis
Conte (Phil Collins, James Taylor, Madonna) and Kalani
(Yanni). In addition, a Havana Horn section accompanies
RONI during his Cuban salsa number, while a 10-piece
orchestra supports the bold and beautifully arranged
ballads.
The 19 dancers in NIGHTS OF FIRE! were carefully
handpicked from a global pool of some of the most
brilliantly diverse talent to be found. Traditional
Flamenco dancers, De La Guarda performers, Broadway
performers, and soloists previously featured with
the likes of Madonna, Gloria Estefan, and Ricky Martin,
have all joined forces to make up RONI’s female
dancers, The Gitanas. Breathtaking couture fashion
and innovative staging and choreography give Spanish
dance a fresh and luminous makeover.
“This is a great show for the whole family;
I really think we have something for everyone,”
comments BENISE. “I hope people will be inspired,
by our story, by the music, by the production and
have the passion to follow their own dreams.”
Looking ahead to future tour dates, BENISE adds, “I
can’t wait to travel to new cities, meet new
people, and play every night--it’s what I live
for.”
BENISE’s NIGHTS OF FIRE! is an inspiring family
experience that celebrates “Music, Love, and
Life.” |

| Carlos
Lopez www.carlitospalitos.com
Born into music, there is not a time in his life
that Carlos remembers not playing it. According to
his mother he was banging on pots and pans before
he spoke. He would often sit quietly to watch his
father play the piano and his mother sing, he was
eventually put into drum lessons at age 5.
At age 11 he was playing for two city youth bands
(Carson Caballeros & Torrance Youth Band) in addition
to his music programs at school and eventually moving
on to becoming one of the youngest members of Drum
Corps International's Velvet Knights of Anaheim by
age 15. In his never ending search for new sound,
Carlos would go on to be the most eclectic of the
musicians in his family. His influences are as diverse
as any pallet could be. They range from industrial
music, rock-n-roll, soul/R&B, jazz, reggae, classical,
world music, and of course salsa. Some of his major
influences have been; Carlos Santana, Tower of Power,
Fishbone, Bach, Bob Marley, The Police, Cal Tjader,
Thelonious Monk, Los Van Van, Tito Rodriguez...just
to name a few, but not necessarily in that order.
Whether playing with jazz trios or big Latin bands,
Carlos' personality and great sense of humor add to
his creative and rhythmic performance. He strongly
believes his talent is a gift from God and the knowledge
he has is not his to keep, but to be shared with people
around the world!

Viva Spanish Nights!
Reviewed by Maria Martinez
Benise delivers a brilliantly crafted show featuring
songs from their new CD entitled "Mediterranea". The
beautifully designed Cerritos Center for the Performing
Arts was host to the 1600 hundred seat sold out show.
The Spanish flamenco style of Benise's music reflects
the connection between the gypsy flamenco sounds and
rhythms from Spain, Mexico and the Caribbean.
The spectacular show featured members of Cirque du Soleil,
Flamenco dancers and guest drummers. The musicians of
Benise include Ron Benise (guitar), Mitch Espe (guitar),
C.G. Ryche (percussion), Carlos Lopez (drumset and percussion)
and Mychal Lomas (bass). The result is a powerful collection
of musicians, dancers and performers.
The opening of the show immediately drew the audience
in with the delightful presentation of a young child
dressed in a traditional flamenco costume offering a
rose and blowing kisses while a Cirque performer hung
fearlessly above the stage on two red curtains performing
an exquisite ballet.
Ron Benise and Mitch Espe have masterfully honed their
craft as evidenced by the fiery and flawless guitar
performances and solos throughout the show. Their rhythm
section that included Mychal Lomas on bass created the
powerful bottom-end which supported the rhythms and
melodies of each song.
With the special effects of lights and fog, Benise's
music provided the back drop for different acts through
out the show with the audience once again taken in by
the introduction of flamenco style dancers performing
to the traditional rhythms of the cajon. In addition,
the Cirque performers accomplished acrobatic feats of
incredible strength and agility during an act not for
the weak of heart.
The theatrics and interaction of the percussionist (C.G.
Ryche) and drummer (Carlos Lopez) added to the entire
visual experience of the show. Their unwavering pulse
provided a solid groove throughout their performance.
To add to a night of surprises, featured guest drummers;
Ron Powell, Paulo Matiolli, Richie Garcia, Ronnie Gutierrez,
Mike Gutierrez, Ricardo Wilkins, Fernando Diez, Michael
Duffy and Matthew Huffschmit marched through the audience
and onto the stage playing a 6/8 African rhythm on Djembes,
joined by Ryche and Lopez. Ryche's array of percussion
instruments also included a gong and Tiako drum which
he played on "Bridge of Sighs". The two drummers went
on to trade solos during "Allegria" that ended with
a unison file which aroused the audience to an uproarious
applause. Throughout the night it was these kinds of
events that kept the audience on the edge of their seats.
With a standing ovation Benise left the stage only to
return and play "Taboo" and "Galletto's" as their final
encore. The show ended with the introduction of all
the performers and a final bow.

Thousand Oaks musician Roni Benise wants fans to 'feel
the passion'
By Mark Wyckoff, mwyckoff@insidevc.com
January 9, 2003
The electric guitars Roni Benise once treasured so dearly
are now stuck in the back of a closet, dusty reminders
of an abandoned rock 'n' roll life.
He pulled the plug almost five years ago, walking away
from an unfulfilling life of smoky bars, pay-to-play
clubs and the always elusive dream of a big-time recording
deal. He loved music, but rock just wasn't cutting it
for him, either financially or spiritually.
But a chance spin through the radio dial changed his
life and his musical direction forever. His absent-minded
channel surfing had landed him on a station playing
the music of flamenco guitarist Mark Antoine. Benise
(pronounced buh-ness-ee) was blown away by the beauty,
the passion and the mystique of Antoine's playing and
he rushed out to buy the guitarist's latest record.
"That was four and a half years ago, and I
don't think I've played electric guitar since," said
Benise, who has lived in Thousand Oaks for a decade.
Tossing the Les Pauls and the Fenders into the closet,
the musician picked up an acoustic guitar and began
to furiously immerse himself in the flamenco genre.
"When things just click, they click," he said.
"You can feel it. And that's what happened when I started
playing flamenco music. It was what I was meant to do
all along."
Within a year, this ex-rocker with Midwestern roots
and Czechoslovakian ancestry had begun to master the
Spanish guitar. In 2000 he recorded his first all-instrumental
flamenco CD, "Taboo," and started selling it at his
live shows and through the Internet.
He played everywhere he could, from free shows at Borders
bookstores to street fairs, and gradually started to
build a fan base. Sales were slow at first but picked
up exponentially as word-of-mouth began to kick in.
All along, Benise wisely used the Internet to build
up an e-mail database that he uses to keep fans informed
about new albums and live shows.
Five independently released CDs later, he and his four-piece
band -- dubbed, simply, Benise -- can book a venue like
the 1,800-seat Fred Kavli Theatre at Civic Arts Plaza
in Thousand Oaks and sell it out almost entirely by
word-of-mouth.
Such is the case with the group's Jan. 11 show at the
Kavli. If you don't have a ticket, you're out of luck
-- unless you can scrape up an extra at the venue on
the day of the show. "Tickets went on sale
Nov. 15 and by Dec. 21, I think, we had it all sold
out," Benise said. "People are coming up from San Diego,
Riverside and all around to see it. We are very excited
about it."
Benise hasn't tapped into a market hungry for flamenco
music so much as he's created one. Many of his most
diehard fans are new to the genre, just like he was
in the beginning. They'll hear him playing outside at
a street fair, or inside at Borders, and be intrigued
enough by his exotic Spanish guitar sounds to shell
out $15 for a CD. A week later, they're so hooked they
log on to his Web site (www.benise.com) and buy the
rest of his catalog.
It's a scenario that's happened time and time again,
as many of the posts on his site's guestbook attest.
"I have never been a flamenco person," posted
a woman named Joanie. "But I was attending a street
fair in Thousand Oaks when I heard this incredible sound.
I was drawn to it like some distant memory."
Benise believes it's the "passion of the music" that
people are responding to. The liner notes to his new
CD implore listeners to "live the romance ... feel the
passion." "It's extremely romantic music,"
he said, "but it's also still very dynamic. We include
a rock 'n' roll element, too, which really kicks things
up a notch."
The band's large-venue gigs, like Saturday's Kavli show,
certainly have a rock 'n' roll feel to them, complete
with pulsing strobes and lots of onstage movement thanks
to the band's troupe of flamenco dancers. The Thousand
Oaks show will also feature appearances by the Rosanegra
String Quartet (featuring John Tesh's violinist, Jim
Sitterly) and ex-Cirque de Soleil dancer Christine Van
Loo, who will do a "silk act" during the song "Corazon."
"She's actually above us, hanging from the
ceiling on a silk ribbon, doing acrobatics to the music,"
Benise said. "It's amazing to watch. It's like a dream
for me, because I always wanted my music to be acted
out like that."
Benise writes, arranges and produces all of the music
on the group's CDs, which include the fiery "Spanish
Nights" (2002) and the exquisitely subdued "Romance
& Passion" (2001).
The group's latest disc, "Mediterranea," came out in
November on Benise's own Rosanegra Music label. Besides
the regular members of Benise --Mitch Espe on guitar,
C.G. Ryche on percussion, Carlos Lopez on drums and
Mychal Lomas on bass -- the disc features the work of
Grammy-winning percussion legend Luis Conte.
"He lives in Thousand Oaks," Benise said. "I met him
at a benefit and he was in town when we were recording.
He ended up playing on seven of the songs."
Just as many of the songs on "Spanish Nights" were inspired
by a trip Benise took to Barcelona, it was a vacation
on the Italian island of Capri that gave life to many
of the pieces on "Mediterranea." "It's always
people and places that inspire me," Benise said. "I
carry my guitar around everywhere, so of course I had
it with me on Capri. It was the off-season there, so
I felt like I was the only one there. I just picked
up this very rhythmic, very danceable vibe."
One song definitely not inspired by the island trip
was a "very spicy, very hot" tune called "Santa Barbara."
"I wrote it last November, right after we
had played a show there," he said. "It was a beautiful
fall day and the leaves were turning. I was sitting
in this little courtyard and I hit the first chord and
the whole song just flashed in front of me."
Benise's next CD may well sport a bit of South American
flair. "I'm thinking of going to Brazil this
year," Benise said. "We'll see."

Benise: Viva Spanish Nights!

BeniseÌs (pronounced buh-NESS-ee) sold-out show at Thousand
OaksÌ Civic Arts Plaza featured some of the finest Flamenco
guitar anywhere these days, along with the phenomenal
artistry of Cirque du Soleil acrobats, Flamenco Dancers
and the Rosenagra String Quartet. Talk about amazing!
Featuring original gems with sensitive poetic power
and intense rhythms, executed with formidable technique
on many levels, this show exuded an excitingly wonderful
romantic and sultry presentation.
The astounding self-taught stylings of guitarist Roni
Benise are uplifting and energizing. With a seductive
Latin flavor, BeniseÌs music is a tribute to some of
the world's greatest Flamenco guitarists. Benise not
only shows his respect for the masters of the genre,
but his eclectic style exhibits a dexterity of guitar
and masterful composition.
Roni, along with Mitch Espe, have an exquisitely engaging
playing style that could quite possibly make masters
like Govi or Ottmar Liebert jealous. Roni and Mitch
brilliantly meld their guitar talents to create a fusion
of traditional Flamenco accompanied by the exotic Latin
rhythms and percussion of Carlos Lopez and C. G. Ryche.
The bandÌs technical skills are highlighted with a fluid,
stunning virtuosity, demonstrating a distinctly original
melting pot of rhythm all their own.
The show began quietly, guitar and percussion setting
the stage for a more upbeat experience, as Christine
Van Loo dangles breathtakingly above from a red silk
sash. The Rosanegra String Quartet added an interesting
contrast to the smooth, yet complex and deeply layered
compositions. Strobe lights help keep the energy alive,
pulsating to the rhythmic beats with exactness.
With Flamenco guitar in the forefront, the clapping
and fast percussion demonstrated how integral the beats
are in the overall execution of the music, lending to
the imagery of growing up in an old Latin neighborhood
in the summertime. Other members of the band add their
talents to make the show truly stand out as an authentic,
yet newly intriguing explosive celebration of the Spanish
Flamenco experience.
The tangos, (sans guitar, with clapping, heels and voices)
are equally exhilarating with a stellar choreography
featuring a tantalizing merger of old and new, with
an ever-present sensuality. There is a sensual gypsy
grace in the dancersÌ movements, which had a lasting
effect, as people were heard to discuss over an hour
after the show. The hauntingly somber aura of Bridge
of Sighs was uplifted by the sensual acrobatic dance
beautifully executed by Christine Van Loo and Sonny
Brown.
Thankfully, rather than cloak them in darkness, Benise
showcases and celebrates his accompanistÌs talents by
having guitarist Mitch Espe sit alongside him, introducing
the artists in the show several times throughout the
performance: Mycal Lomas on bass, percussionists Carlos
Lopez, C. G. Ryche and the Rosanegra String Quartet
(featuring John TeshÌs violinist, Jim Sitterly).
It will be interesting to watch Benise's sure to be
stellar career continue to develop. All of the performers
in the show have a real passion for their music, exhibiting
an amazing ability to maintain the interest level throughout
the show, creating a variety for the traditional mix
of Los Angeles ages and ethnicities. It is always exciting
to experience an event that was obviously made with
a deep sense of pride and heart.
Benise: Viva Spanish Nights is a truly shining example
of just how incredible and transforming instrumental
music can be. Music can alter feelings and transport
the soul to beautiful places. The essence of Flamenco
is romance. Benise captures that essence, and if we
are lucky, they are destined to become a major force
in the word of Flamenco Ç and the international language
of music. BeniseÌs ageless and timeless music is a must
have for any guitar lover, romantic, or romantic hopeful.
